In recent years, the overseas music markets have shifted themselves towards digital, and streaming service have become mainstream. Also in Japan, the way users enjoy their music is changing greatly. On the other hand, the subscription-based music streaming services have not become the norm in Japan yet, and in light of the ongoing problem of illegal downloading services, we decided to start offering our new service “AWA” in May 2015 to propose to the users new ways to encounter and enjoy music.
Since the commencement of the service, “AWA” has enjoyed the addition of various new functions such as “offline playback” and “multi-device compatibility.” On Monday, November 7, 2016, we launched the new “Free Plan” which allows users to enjoy all functions (with the exception of “offline playback”) including the main features such as “on-demand playback” which enables playback of any tune on all devices including smartphones and PCs and “playlist creating/sharing” function, for no monthly charge. For our users’ new musical encounters and enjoyment, we added extra new features including “highlight playback” – a function that plays short version of one track to another cross-fadingly.
Furthermore, as with My Little Lover whose priority distribution commenced on November 14, we have already carried out priority distributions of tracks by notable J-POP artists such as Ayumi Hamasaki, Sonar Pocket, AAA, Kankaku Pierrot, and the total number of the distributed tracks are over 30 million, making us one of the largest music streaming services in Japan. Currently a wide range of users are enjoying our services from those in their teens to those in their 60s, with 70% of users aged 35 or younger. We continue to rapidly expand our services, as we have achieved over 6.5 million “AWA”-exclusive playlists that have been put together by eminent artists, popular DJs and celebrities such as music producers, and of course our general users.
At “AWA”, we will endeavor to assist the flourishing Japanese music industry by pursuing services that make new musical encounters and reunions a pleasant experience and by further expanding the functions and the number of tracks available
